Bosco and his wife Edith are social innovators working near Arua, Uganda while raising their 7 children and fostering an extended family of more than twenty children. Northern Uganda is recovering from over two decades of armed conflict, which resulted in the displacement of almost the entire population of nearby regions. Many young people who experienced or witnessed multiple war crimes find it hard to regain time lost from schooling. These conditions limit choices in rebuilding their lives and disrupt family dynamics, as most youth then migrate in search for jobs and settle in the red light districts of the cities.
The inevitable consequences are:
- Food insecurity
- High rate of illiteracy
- Addictions like alcoholism and prostitution
- Broken dysfunctional families including divorce
- Generational poverty cycle
Bosco and Edith realized that to give students the opportunity to rebuild their future, they needed a twofold strategy: Open a primary school for youth in Lira, Uganda, and build career opportunities for students through business apprenticeship programs. These programs will then re-invest in the sustainability of the school, continuing the cycle of acceleration.
For several years, they have invested their hearts and souls into a successful primary school program. Now, it is time for the second phase to begin. Through a strategic piggery project, Bosco and Edith plan to give older youth an opportunity to learn agricultural skills and begin a path towards financial sustainability. They seek to play a positive role model for their family and the community by encouraging the development of small and medium-scale family enterprises as an effective way of poverty reduction and community development among the most vulnerable populations of Northern Uganda.
Giving Tuesday is a global movement of people like you, who believe their small acts of generosity can create change that ripples for generations. We’re thrilled to announce that during this week of global giving, YOU raised over $6,700 to help youth in Northern Uganda rebuild their futures!
THANK YOU for standing with us, Bosco, and the many social innovators working tirelessly to bring sustainable solutions to their community. Together, change is possible!
